Acute Care Bundle Improvement

Driving Health System Change Through Partnerships in Acute Care

AbSPORU is a critical partner in the implementation of innovative initiatives

Health system transformation in Alberta requires partnerships between stakeholders and effective program implementation. The Acute Care Bundle Improvement (ACBI) initiative is a key priority for Alberta Health Services and is being implemented at 14 major acute care sites across Alberta. AbSPORU’s Learning Health System (LHS) team provides effective advice and implementation strategies for moving research evidence into practice and policy and has been instrumental in the success of this large scale initiative across Alberta.

What is ACBI?
Streamlining Processes

Health services organizations, including Alberta Health Services (AHS), typically have a number of initiatives being rolled out across the province at any given time. The ACBI standardizes eight different initiatives across Alberta’s 14 major acute care sites by identifying and implementing best practices for staff workflows when it comes to admissions, daily care, discharge and transition. For example, health care providers and clinicians were able to use tools within the newly launched electronic medical record to implement these best practices, resulting in the reduction of system inefficiencies such as length of stay and hospital readmissions. By streamlining processes, duplication and inefficiencies are greatly reduced and patient care and outcomes are improved.

The support from the AbSPORU LHS team has really helped us support Operational teams to drive health system change and outcomes for patients. Tracy Waslyk, Chief Program Officer, Strategic Clinical Networks – AHS & Co-Lead – Learning Health System Team, ABSPORU

AbSPORU’s LHS team is instrumental in creating relevant and effective strategies for ACBI implementation. The LHS team are skilled experts in implementation science (IS). Over two and a half years, they have provided guidance and strategic implementation science principles and practices to adopt the ACBI across the 14 sites. We collaborated with the ACBI implementation team to develop the prototype of an implementation playbook that can be tailored for each site, co-designing strategies with local site leaders to ensure relevance, usability and effectiveness.

Building Capacity in Alberta

One of the main priorities of AbSPORU and the LHS team is capacity building. As part of the ACBI working group, we support the training of site leads and are co-designing strategies to ensure relevancy and effectiveness. The goal is to help the sites understand the principles of IS so that they are able to identify and address barriers and strategically implement best practices so that changes are long-lasting.

"We are in a unique position to contribute to the development of implementation science because what we are involved in is so practical. We are involved in day to day change over a long period of time." - Denise Thomson, Associate Director - Learning Health System, AbSPORU
AbSPORU’s expertise in implementation science is instrumental to catalyzing a learning health system.

The LHS team is a leader in IS. We hold an important position within the health system as implementation support specialists which allows us to add value to the ACBI and many other initiatives that build capacity. We are actively engaged in training the next generation of IS practitioners through AbSPORU’s numerous and varied training programs, certificate courses, eLearning modules, and conferences.

The ACBI is just one example of how we support health professionals to not only implement new practices and policy, but also how to sustain those changes.

Our Impact
AbSPORU’s strong implementation strategies helps to ensure new practice and policy can be sustained.
"From a research and implementation perspective , AbSPORU helps support academics and researchers building implementation that can be supported in the delivery system. AbSPORU provides a better understanding of how to think about spread and scale in the implementation process." - Tracy
