This tool can be used to measure the degree to which a project meets the definition of patient-oriented research as described by the CIHR Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR). The tool uses five criteria adopted from SPOR published documents and rates each on a scale from 1 to 5.

The criteria include:

• patients are partners,
• patient identified priorities,
• outcomes important to patients,
• team is multidisciplinary, and
• team aims to integrate knowledge into practice.
